How to talk about dating intentions

Discuss the kind of connection you want without assuming that a shared orientation means shared relationship expectations.

Separate attraction from relationship style

Being pansexual does not mean being attracted to everyone, being available for every kind of encounter or wanting multiple partners. Ask about the individual. You can say: “I am open to a relationship, but I like to get to know someone slowly. What are you looking for at the moment?” This shares your position without asking the other person to match it.

Turn broad labels into practical questions

Words such as “casual”, “serious” and “open” can mean different things. Discuss what matters to you: how often you might meet, whether exclusivity is important and whether existing relationship agreements affect dating. Share only information you are comfortable discussing, but do not conceal circumstances that would materially affect the other person’s decision.

Allow an honest mismatch

You can enjoy a conversation and still want different things. “I like talking with you, but our expectations seem different” is clearer than hoping someone will change. Check in again if your intentions change over time. An initial conversation is a starting point, not a permanent commitment to a relationship you no longer want.
